Sagrada Família launches new audio guides for visitors who are blind or partially sighted

Nacional, 11/07/2019

Madrid, July 11, 2019. The Sagrada Familia has a new resource for visitors who are blind or partially sighted: an audio guide with audio description of the basilica. This audio guide is an adaptation of the general script according to the criteria of visual accessibility, and is available in Catalan, Spanish and English.
The audio description (according to UNE 153020:2005) is a communication support service that consists in a set of techniques and skills applied in order to compensate the lack of visual information contained in any type of message. It provides accurate sound explanations, with the purpose that the visitor with visual impairment or blindness perceives the message as a harmonic whole and in the most similar way as perceived by a person who sees.
The project, coordinated by Audioguiarte, has been made in collaboration with professionals specialized in audio description, rigorously applying the indications given by ONCE Foundation and the quality requirements included in the norm that regulates it. In addition, a group of blind and partially sighted users visited the basilica to test the script. Their contribution has been essential to outline and complete the first descriptive proposal, especially when it comes to reinforcing the tactile accessibility of elements such as wrought iron, reliefs, textures and volumes.
The audio guide incorporates detailed descriptions that invite to an active observation by touch, explanations about the effect of the light and colors in the temple, information that is omitted in the normosensitive version. It invites to spatial perception through sound and also includes references about location and orientation. The content is clear and simple, emphasizes the pauses, and intonation and vocalization are accentuated to facilitate comprehension. Also, the audio guide devices are accessible, have a manual keyboard and raised marker on key #5.
Audioguiarte and the Sagrada Familia work together to provide guided tours for all visitor profiles. This project pursues excellence, both in the high quality of content and technology, and in the visitor services.
